A short History of the Holmwood Estate

Local historian and past Chairman of the Friends of Badock’s Wood, Alan Aburrow, has recently published a booklet entitled A Short History of The Holmwood Estate. This includes details of Badock’s Wood (together with a short biography of Sir Stanley Badock), Southmead Round Barrow (with its modern sculpture), Holmwood National Children’s Home, Westbury Wildlife Park and the protracted saga of the original planning “battle” in 1988/92 which preceded the granting of Planning Permission for the 31-house Holmwood Gardens development.

The 32-page A5 booklet records the development of an early 18th century farm house in Westbury-on-Trym through a succession of owners, with their associated land acquisitions and disposals in Southmead and Westbury, to the present day. The booklet also includes many previously unpublished photographs.

Copies of the book are available, over the counter, from Westbury Inks in Westbury Village (14 Canford Lane BS9 3DH, opposite the Co-op) – priced at £3.00 each (that’s 8% off the Cover Price of £3.25). Alternatively, copies can be posted for £4.00 (inc P&P) – please contact the Publishers for further details.
